The Warnings

Margaret Buffie

Original title, The Guardian Circle

Rachel’s single father sends her off to live with a strange great aunt she has never met before while he travels across Canada for work. When she arrives in Toronto, Rachel’s strange visions and feelings become stronger and more ominous than ever before. They feel like warnings. Luckily, she meets a new friend who doesn’t think she is crazy and they set off to find out what they are, and what is happening? Is it ghosts? Magic? Or are the old people who live with her aunt playing tricks on Rachel?

The Warnings (original title, The Guardian Circle) is a great book for older children and teens. I would recommend it for grades 4-10. The Warnings is a wonderful ghost story with intrigue and a little bit of history in it. The story takes places in Toronto and Western Canada. This book was not predictable, I had no idea what was going to happen until the very end and there is a large cast of supporting characters who had a lot of involvement in the plot. This book is not part of a series. – Heather M.

The Hazel Wood

Melissa Albert

Seventeen-year-old Alice and her mother have spent most of Alice’s life on the road, always a step ahead of the uncanny bad luck biting at their heels. When Alice’s grandmother, the reclusive author of a cult-classic book of pitch-dark fairy tales, dies alone on her estate, the Hazel Wood, Alice learns how bad her luck can really get. Her mother is stolen away—by a figure who claims to come from the Hinterland, the cruel supernatural world where her grandmother’s stories are set. Alice’s only lead is the message her mother left behind: “Stay away from the Hazel Wood.”

Alice has long steered clear of her grandmother’s cultish fans. Now she has no choice but to ally with classmate Ellery Finch, a Hinterland superfan who may have his own reasons for wanting to help her. To retrieve her mother, Alice must venture first to the Hazel Wood, then into the world where her grandmother’s tales began—and where she might find out how her own story went so wrong.

Bringing together multiple genres – hip-hop, pop, electronic, and rock – during this musical voyage, each song with a new diverse sound from the other. With its 14 diverse songs regardless of what kind of music you’re into, this album has a song for everyone.

The album’s vocals produced by vocalist Tyler Joseph, with a voice unlike any other, place Twenty One Pilots as a highly recognizable sound to all. Through his voice, the raw emotion in the songs pours out to the listeners, all backed by distinctive drums, piano, and electronic beats. The drums further the band’s sound through nearly all their songs, adding a unique and catchy beat behind the lyrics with drummer Josh Dun’s display of expert drumming. Altogether, emitting music with a catchy tone, whether it be purely vocals, drums, electronic, piano, and often a mix of all.

Not only does the sound of the album itself resonate with listeners, the lyrics themselves ooze with emotion in songs such as “Goner”, “HeavyDirtySoul”, and “Stressed Out” and people can find ways to relate to them in some way. While other songs such as “Tear In Your Heart”, “Ride”, and “Lane Boy” will have you on your feet, singing along to the catchy, upbeat lyrics.
