5 Stars

Caraval: Amazon.ca: Garber, Stephanie: Books

Stephanie Garber’s novel Caraval follows a girl named Scarlett Dragna on a journey of self-discovery, and the unbreakable bond between sisters. Caraval is a magical show of performers and magic where the viewers can play the game. When Scarlett’s sister Tella is kidnapped for this year’s show, Scarlett now has to face an island of magic and illusion, discover clues to find Tella. Before it’s too late.

I enjoyed the metamorphosis Scarlett finds herself in and how her relationship with Julian, the “mysterious sailor”, is not rushed. I loved how the story kept me guessing, with its magical mysteries and constant plot twists. The scenes were written exceptionally and kept me turning pages, especially with the use of colours and smells.

However, I do believe there was more potential with Scarlett’s parents, especially her mother. The plot twist at the end was a little sudden though I thoroughly enjoyed reading all the same. Otherwise, I don’t have anything bad to say, and I adored this book.

Stephanie Garber put the magical elements of Holly Black’s Heart of the Moors and the mystical confusion of Alice in Wonderland together in the most perfect way. I would recommend Caraval for readers 13 and up who enjoy fantasy, magic, plot twists and dystopia with an unexpected romance.

Caraval by Stephanie Garber made me feel as Scarlett felt, cry when she was sad, laugh, and that is the most important part of a book for me. Which is why I gave this book a five-star rating.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child

J.K. Rowling

Nineteen years after the Battle of Hogwarts, we take a glimpse into the wizarding world and the life of Harry Potter and his family. This story is based on the play that is showcased in London and New York, and as a result, is written as a script. Harry Potter is now a hardworking employee of the Minister of Magic, a husband, and the father of three children. It’s not easy being the son of a legend, especially when that legend is Harry Potter himself. Harry and Ginny’s youngest son, Albus, is attending Hogwarts this year with the weight of a legacy he never asked for. Join Harry in his son while they form a unique father and son bond. Watch history repeat itself as you stroll back to the school which once was Harry’s. Filled with old favourites like Hermione, Ron, Draco, and McGonagall this script is sure to revive some old memories of magic. Harry and Albus are both forced to learn that darkness and evil and arise from the most unsuspecting places.

The Cursed Child is an amazing read, especially if you have fallen in love with the world of Harry Potter. It is not formatted like the rest of the series, however, if you are able to get past that, then I definitely recommend this book. Enter this magically world one more time with Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. Action, suspense, and mystery fill the pages of this book, and J. K. Rowling keeps you on edge with her exciting new installment of Harry Potter. -Ananya M.

Tales of the Peculiar

Ransom Riggs

Tales of the Peculiar is a selection of short, and strange stories set before the novel Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. In this collection, Ransom Riggs has created a number of enchanting tales that take you through a wild journey from a land of law-abiding cannibals, a kingdom with a princess who’s a half-snake, and far away to ancient China where a young man has seaweed growing out of his armpits. In a magical, fun-loving way, Riggs tells tales with themes of discrimination, racism, and empowerment that are sure to send you right into each story!

Personally, I loved the book. I thought each story was fresh and inviting, and I read them to my younger siblings who loved it as well. I love Riggs’ main series, and this spin-off is something anyone could read with or without reading the main series and still feel the magical thrill of a tall tale without any sense of confusion. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who loves the fantastical! – Jacqueline S.

Beastly

Alex Flinn

Kyle Kingsbury’s good looks and father’s riches got him far in life. He was just named as one of the prince nominees for the spring dance court when his classmate, Kendra Hilferty, brings attention to how disgusting it is that these competitions are based on a person’s attractiveness rather than more important qualities such as intelligence or bravery. Wanting to put her in her place, Kyle decides to humiliate her at the school dance. In return, she reveals to him her true identity as a witch and transforms Kyle into a creature with claws, fangs, and an excessive amount of hair. As a beast, Kyle must find true love in two years or remain this way forever.

Kyle is portrayed to be an unlikeable character at the beginning of the novel. Alex Flinn exaggerates the bad qualities associated with him to have this impact on the reader. His manipulative nature, conceitedness, and insensitivity are made clear through his actions and interactions with other characters in the story. After he is put under Kendra’s spell, we see a new side to him causing our perceptions of him to shift. For instance, Kyle becomes compassionate and sensitive to the issues of others. This teaches readers that everyone has the potential to change. This and the many other morals in this book, that mainly relate to love, make this a worthwhile read.

I associate a very nostalgic mood with parts of this book due to the many fairy tale references it includes. Often in the novel, there would be text threads between Kyle and other creatures that were considering transformations or were transformed. The screen name, SilentMaid, represented the Little Mermaid. This was done in a mature way that didn’t make you feel like you were reading a book targeted at a younger audience. These text threads also added a more interesting element to the book because it told the story in a creative way.

The short two years the beast was given to reverse the curse was a strategic way of implementing suspense into Alex Flinn’s novel. It gradually increases in intensity as Kyle’s deadline approaches. It makes you obsessively continue reading to anxiously see if Kyle can manage to change back to his former self. The ending of the novel relieves the readers stress and leaves them very satisfied because it doesn’t just resolve the problems of the main characters, but updates us on the supporting characters like Kyle’s blind tutor, Will. For these reasons, I found Beastly to be a stunning read. – Julia K.

The Warnings

Margaret Buffie

Original title, The Guardian Circle

Rachel’s single father sends her off to live with a strange great aunt she has never met before while he travels across Canada for work. When she arrives in Toronto, Rachel’s strange visions and feelings become stronger and more ominous than ever before. They feel like warnings. Luckily, she meets a new friend who doesn’t think she is crazy and they set off to find out what they are, and what is happening? Is it ghosts? Magic? Or are the old people who live with her aunt playing tricks on Rachel?

The Warnings (original title, The Guardian Circle) is a great book for older children and teens. I would recommend it for grades 4-10. The Warnings is a wonderful ghost story with intrigue and a little bit of history in it. The story takes places in Toronto and Western Canada. This book was not predictable, I had no idea what was going to happen until the very end and there is a large cast of supporting characters who had a lot of involvement in the plot. This book is not part of a series. – Heather M.
